Redbud, (Eastern Redbud or Cercis canadensis) is a small deciduous tree native to eastern North America. Overall, Redbud is valued for its early spring flowers, attractive foliage, and adaptability to various soil conditions, making it a beloved addition to gardens and landscapes across its native range.

Appearance:
Leaves: The leaves are heart-shaped or broadly ovate, typically 3-5 inches long, and have a smooth edge. They emerge reddish-purple in spring, mature to green in summer, and turn yellow or yellow-green in fall before dropping. Flowers: Redbud is renowned for its profusion of small, pea-like flowers that bloom in early spring (March to May, depending on location) before the leaves appear. The flowers can be pink, magenta, or rarely white, covering the bare branches and making a dramatic display. Fruit: After flowering, Redbud produces flat, bean-like pods (legumes) that ripen in late summer to fall. These pods are typically 2-4 inches long and persist into winter, adding additional interest to the tree.

Size and Growth: Redbud typically grows 20-30 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded crown with a spreading, often multi-trunked habit. It is a relatively fast-growing tree, adding about 1-2 feet of height per year under optimal conditions.

Habitat and Range: Redbud is found naturally in open woodlands, along forest edges, and on rocky slopes. It is native to a large part of eastern North America, from southern Ontario and Pennsylvania south to northern Florida, and west to eastern Texas and Oklahoma. Landscaping Uses: Redbud is popular in landscaping for its ornamental qualities, especially its abundant spring flowers. It is used as a specimen tree in gardens, parks, and along streets, where its early spring bloom provides a welcome burst of color.

Maintenance: Redbud is generally low-maintenance once established, preferring well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Pruning can be done to shape the tree when young, but mature Redbuds typically require minimal pruning.
