Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis) – A Graceful Native Grass

Prairie Dropseed is a warm-season, perennial bunchgrass known for its fine-textured, arching green foliage and fragrant, airy flower panicles. It is a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance native grass that thrives in prairies, meadows, and open landscapes, providing essential habitat for pollinators, birds, and small mammals.

Foliage: Fine, hair-like, bright green leaves that form graceful, fountain-like clumps. Leaves turn golden-orange in fall and light brown in winter, offering multi-season interest. Emits a subtle fragrance, sometimes described as buttery, coriander-like, or popcorn-scented when in bloom.
Flowers & Seed Heads: Delicate, wispy flower panicles rise above the foliage on thin, arching stems, blooming mid-to-late summer. Tiny, pink-tinted florets create a cloud-like effect, giving the plant an airy appearance. Produces small, round seeds that drop to the ground in late summer, inspiring the name “Dropseed.”
Height & Spread: Grows 2 to 3 feet tall (including flower stalks). Spreads 2 to 3 feet wide, forming dense, non-aggressive clumps.
Roots: Deep fibrous root system (up to 5 feet deep), making it highly drought-tolerant. Helps stabilize soil and prevent erosion.
Habitat & Range: Native to central and eastern North America, thriving in tallgrass prairies, dry meadows, and open woodlands. Prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soils and thrives in full sun. Adapted to harsh conditions, including drought and poor soils.
Wildlife Benefits: Seeds provide food for songbirds and small mammals. Pollinators visit its flowers, including native bees and butterflies. Provides cover and nesting material for insects and ground-dwelling birds.

Distinct Fragrance: The tiny flowers release a unique scent, often described as coriander, buttered popcorn, or fresh spun sugar.
Erosion Control & Soil Stabilization: With its deep root system, Prairie Dropseed is ideal for erosion control on slopes, roadsides, and restoration sites.
Long-Lived & Low Maintenance: Can live for decades in the right conditions. Requires little maintenance beyond occasional trimming in spring.

Growing Prairie Dropseed: Best for prairie gardens, pollinator habitats, and erosion control. Thrives in full sun and prefers dry to moderately moist, well-drained soils. Highly drought-tolerant once established. Non-aggressive, forming well-behaved clumps. Low maintenance—cut back old growth in early spring for fresh new foliage.
