Green Giant Arborvitae (Thuja standishii × plicata) – A Fast-Growing Evergreen for Privacy and Windbreaks

Green Giant Arborvitae is a large, fast-growing, evergreen conifer prized for its dense, pyramid-shaped foliage and tolerance to a wide range of growing conditions. Low-maintenance tree that is often used for privacy screens, windbreaks, and specimen plantings in landscapes.

Foliage: Rich green, scale-like leaves that are soft and fragrant. Evergreen, retaining color year-round without bronzing in winter. Grows in flat sprays with a slightly feathery texture.
Height & Spread: Grows 30 to 50 feet tall and 12 to 20 feet wide at maturity. Fast-growing—adds 3 to 5 feet per year under optimal conditions.
Growth Habit: Upright, pyramidal shape with a dense, uniform appearance. Tight, compact branching provides excellent privacy screening.
Cones & Seeds: Produces small, oval-shaped cones, about ½ inch long. Cones start green and mature to light brown in late summer.
Bark: Reddish-brown, fibrous bark, slightly peeling in older trees. Adds texture and interest to mature specimens.
Roots: Fibrous, shallow root system with good adaptability to different soils. Does not cause major underground disturbance.
Habitat & Range: A hybrid cultivar, not naturally occurring in the wild. Thrives in temperate climates, adaptable from zones 5 to 8. Prefers full sun to partial shade and grows in a variety of soil types.
Wildlife Benefits: Provides year-round shelter for birds and small mammals. Deer-resistant, unlike many other arborvitae species.

One of the Fastest-Growing Evergreens: Can grow 3 to 5 feet per year, outpacing other arborvitae and cedars. A great choice for quick privacy hedges and windbreaks.
Disease & Pest Resistance: More resistant to blight and bagworms than other arborvitae species.
Wind & Cold Tolerance: Withstands strong winds, making it ideal for windbreak plantings. More cold-hardy than Leyland Cypress, making it a better option in northern climates.

Growing Green Giant Arborvitae: Best for privacy hedges, windbreaks, and specimen plantings. Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight daily. Prefers moist, well-drained soil, but is adaptable to clay, loam, and sandy soils. Drought-tolerant once established, but benefits from deep watering in dry periods. Plant 5 to 8 feet apart for a dense hedge. Low-maintenance—rarely needs pruning unless shaping is desired.
