Sorghastrum nutans – Golden Sunset – A Refined, Upright Variety of Indian Grass

Sorghastrum nutans ‘Golden Sunset’ is a cultivated selection of native Indian Grass, bred for its strong upright habit, golden-bronze flower plumes, and compact growth. This low-maintenance, drought-tolerant ornamental grass adds warm-season interest to prairie gardens, meadows, and naturalistic landscapes, while providing food and shelter for wildlife. It thrives in full sun and poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping, erosion control, and pollinator gardens.

Foliage: Blue-green, arching blades in spring and summer. Turns golden-yellow to deep copper in fall, holding its color into winter. Stays upright and compact, with minimal flopping compared to standard Indian Grass.
Height & Spread: Grows 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Forms a dense, vertical clump, ideal for borders and mass plantings.
Flowers & Seed Heads: Produces golden-bronze flower panicles, rising above the foliage in late summer to fall. Seed heads shimmer in sunlight, adding texture and movement to landscapes. Provides winter interest and food for birds.
Growth Habit: Clump-forming, slowly spreading through short rhizomes. Low-maintenance and non-invasive.
Roots & Rhizomes: Deep, fibrous root system, making it highly drought-tolerant and excellent for erosion control. Improves soil structure and stabilizes slopes.
Habitat & Range: A cultivar of native Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans), adapted for ornamental use. Thrives in prairies, meadows, and open landscapes. Prefers full sun and dry to moderately moist, well-drained soils.
Wildlife Benefits: Seeds provide food for birds in fall and winter. Host plant for skipper butterfly caterpillars. Deer-resistant, though young shoots may be lightly grazed.

Improved Habit Over Standard Indian Grass: Unlike wild Indian Grass, which can be floppy, ‘Golden Sunset’ maintains a strong, upright shape.
Golden-Bronze Panicles Add Movement & Texture: The airy, golden seed heads shimmer in sunlight, creating a dynamic visual effect.
Excellent for Tough Conditions: Thrives in dry, nutrient-poor soils, making it ideal for sustainable landscaping.
